This book, illustrated with maps and photographs, is about west London. It describes and discusses the sights of this part of London, as well its past, present, and future. An informative companion to west London, it is aimed both at both the interested explorer and the armchair traveller.
Until about 1800, what we now call the ‘West End’ was at the western edge of London. To the west of Mayfair and Marylebone, there was open countryside dotted with villages, fields, farms, stately homes, woods, and highwaymen. Even Kensington and Paddington were then separated from London by sparsely populated or empty rural spaces. During the 19th century, London spread westwards; the erstwhile villages grew, and merged with their neighbours. They were also swamped by the city’s relentless expansion. This book explores many places, which were once out in the country but are now in west London: their histories, present features, and prospects. Adam Yamey’s volume delves into both well-known and obscure places west of Park Lane and the part of Edgware Road south of Kilburn. It invites people to discover parts of London, which air travellers can see from up in the sky while descending to the runways at Heathrow Airport, and then speed past on the way to their hotels and homes after landing.
