This book is about Golders Green and its close neighbour Hampstead Garden Suburb. It describes these places past and present.
Many people know Golders Green both as a shopping centre and, also, as a transport hub that serves diverse parts of London. However, few people know that before 1907, the area was a small, unremarkable settlement in rural Middlesex. This new book explains what happened in 1907 and its consequences. One of these was the creation of Hampstead Garden Suburb, which began as an idealistic experiment in breaking down class barriers.
I spent the first three decades of my life residing in our family home in Hampstead Garden Suburb. Golders Green and nearby Temple Fortune were our nearest shopping centres and places served by public transport. The book includes many reminiscences of Golders Green and the Suburb from the 1950s. ‘60s, and ‘70s. Much has changed since then, but my many memories remain vivid. “GOLDERS GREEN & HAMPSTEAD GARDEN SUBURB: VISIONS OF ARCADIA” has 210 pages, an index, a few maps, and many photographs. The book is both a history and a companion guide to this part of northwest London. Directed at residents and visitors alike, this book is available as a paperback from https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0BHG873FB/ .
